Are We Mistaking Laziness for Balance?

A recent reflection inspired by reading The Art of the Turnaround by Alan Todd, alongside a powerful recent conversation with Esther Stanhope on my podcast, has had me thinking deeply about the tension between diligence, ambition, rest, and purpose.

We often hear the phrase: “Work smarter, not harder.”

And yes, wisdom matters.

Strategy matters.

Stewardship matters.

But I sometimes wonder whether, when misunderstood, this mindset can unintentionally open the door to complacency, avoidance, or even laziness disguised as “balance.”

Scripture speaks strongly about diligence.

“Do you see someone skilled and diligent in their work? They will stand before kings…” (Proverbs 22:29)

Solomon repeatedly contrasts the diligent with the sluggard because purpose often requires effort. Growth requires consistency. Calling requires commitment.

There are seasons where we must work hard — wholeheartedly, sacrificially, intentionally. Not striving from insecurity, but labouring with purpose.

Even creation reflects this rhythm:

“The lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God… Then people go out to their work, to their labour until evening.” (Psalm 104:21–23)

There is a time to rise.

A time to labour.

And a time to rest.
